OCA Utah Holds Awards Occasion

OCA Asian Pacific Islander American Advocates Utah held their 21st annual Utah Asian Pacific Islander Community Awards Night time on November 9, 2019, in West Valley Metropolis, Utah. A Filipino buffet used to be catered by BFF Turon. and the Dosa Live Set used to be catered by Saffron Valley, two local restaurants within the space. The raffle featured many prizes donated by the OCA Utah Board and local companies.

Floyd Mori, a Past National President and inclined National Executive Director/CEO of the Japanese American Voters League (JACL) and inclined President/CEO of the Asian Pacific American Institute for Congressional Study (APAICS) in Washington, D.C., used to be honored with the Lifetime Fulfillment Award. Mori taught Economics at Chabot Faculty in Hayward, California, for ten years and used to be a Mayor of the Metropolis of Pleasanton, California. He served as a Member of the California Grunt Assembly for six years. He has long been an indicate for Asian American and Pacific Islander organizations and factors. Mori used to be launched by Verona Mauga, a past president of OCA Utah. OCA National presented Mori with an Well-liked Citizen Award in 2012.

Receiving the Pillar of the Community Award used to be Jacob Fitisemanu, Jr., Council Member for West Valley Metropolis. Fitisemanu used to be born in Original Zealand but used to be raised in Honolulu, Hawaii, and Taylorsville, Utah. He has lived in West Valley Metropolis for twelve years. He used to be appointed to the US Census National Advisory Council in 2014 and serves on the Board of Administrators of the National Asian and Pacific Islander American Health Discussion board. He used to be appointed in 2015 to the White Home Initiative on Asian American citizens and Pacific Islanders where he served till 2017. He oversees the Utah Department of Health Clinics of Utah program.

Assorted awardees for 2019 were: The Ohana Association of Weber Grunt University (Formative years Keen Mountains Award), Ratsamy Bing Vilaiphanh (Spirit of the Community Award), Feagaiga O Ali’I (Living Treasures Award), and Nepalese Association of Utah (Organization of the Year Award).

Some people of the Japanese American community of Salt Lake Metropolis who absorb been honored within the past by OCA Utah are: Resolve Raymond Uno, Wat Misaka, Irene Maya Ota, and Edith Mitko.

Resolve Uno used to be in attendance on the tournament as were Utah Grunt Senator Jani Iwamoto and Dr. Karen Kwan, Utah Grunt Advisor, who used to be a founding father of the OCA Utah Chapter and is Advisor to the Board.

The Salt Lake JACL Chapter and the Mount Olympus JACL Chapter supported the tournament by purchasing tables for the Awards Night time.
